Art takes flight

Artist-in-Residence Program 2026

Starting in spring 2026, the cabanotel a new chapter in its history by opening its doors to contemporary art. Perched at 1,800 meters above sea level at the foot of the Dent Blanche, our establishment becomes a laboratory for experimentation for Swiss artists.

A unique concept: art at the heart of life

Unlike traditional apartment buildings, this project is located within an operating hotel. It is an invitation to dialogue: artists have their own studio and a dedicated room, while sharing moments of daily life with our guests.

The goal? To create a genuine connection between:

  • lContemporary creation and the mountain region.
  • the artist and the public, through spontaneous interactions and a vibrant exhibition space.
  • humans and nature, to reinvent the way we live in the world.

An inspiring and self-directed environment

Formerly known as the Hôtel du Col d’Hérens, the cabanotel now a 100% energy self-sufficient. Amidst silence, breathtaking scenery, and historical heritage, we offer creators a special space and time, far from commercial pressures, to explore new narratives.

Here, the mountains, the silence, and the landscape become sources of inspiration, offering a space to experiment, create, and engage with the place and the community.

Our vision

At cabanotel, we welcome artists who seek to explore and reinvent the connection between humans and nature. We are particularly interested in projects that question our relationship with the environment and society, and that reflect on how to live in harmony with nature, particularly in mountain regions.

Residency Requirements

We actively support the Swiss arts scene through a structured program:

Audience: Swiss artists aged 21 and older (visual arts, literature, film, etc.).

Duration: 3 weeks to 1 month.

Dates: May–June and September–October.

Support: Grant of CHF 1,500 per month (pro-rated), including housing and studio space.

The objectives of the residency

  • To provide an inspiring setting, away from everyday life, allowing artists to devote themselves fully to their practice and research.
  • Encourage free experimentation, without the constraints of immediate production, in an environment that supports boldness and exploration.
  • Supporting thoughtful reflection on our relationship with the world, nature, and possible futures.
  • Provide a lively exhibition space, open to the public and benefiting from regular foot traffic, to enable artists to present their works or work in progress, make themselves known, and interact directly with visitors.
  • Enabling artists, whether emerging or established, to develop or further explore a personal project in a place imbued with powerful creative energy.
